Job roles and billing rates, and hours that run past midnight

Job roles and billing rates

Your organisation can now describe what people do and what that costs. Each job role carries two hourly rates: a sell rate, what you bill for the work, and a cost rate, what the person costs you. Members take the rates of the role they hold, and you can pick the role when you send an invitation rather than after someone joins.

  • Rates are effective-dated. Changing a rate from today onwards opens a new window, so past reports keep billing at the rate that was in effect at the time. Correcting a mistake edits the dated window instead. Every change is kept in an audit trail.
  • Per-project overrides. A role can bill differently on a specific project, and those overrides are dated too.
  • Organisation currency. A new setting, USD by default, used for every amount Clocktopus shows.

Owners and admins get a Billing tab on the summary report, with revenue, cost and margin for each member and project. It's marked experimental while the shape of the report settles.

Organisations that existed before this release start with no job roles, so the Billing tab has nothing to price until an owner creates roles and assigns members to them. Time tracking isn't affected. Rates and project budgets explains the whole model.

Hours that run past midnight

Clocking in before midnight and pushing your first commit after it used to lose the whole stretch: a 23:30 to 00:20 session recorded nothing on either day.

That work is now split at midnight. The evening is credited to the day it happened on, and the new day is measured from midnight. An entry still never spans two days.

The carry-over is deliberately narrow, because it credits time no commit vouches for. It applies only when your session was still active after your working day ended and the next activity lands early the next morning, before your working hours begin. A forgotten clock-out, such as clocking in on Wednesday and pushing on Friday, still closes on its own terms.
