v1.2.0
Project budgets and margin goals, and more
Project budgets
A project can now carry a fixed budget for its whole life and the margin it was quoted to make, and Clocktopus reports how far through both the work has gone. A 30% margin goal on a $12,000 budget means delivery has to cost less than $8,400, and the form shows that cost ceiling as you type.
- The Budgets report (Reports → Budgets) has a card per project: how much of the budget is used, the margin against its goal, and a plain-English reading of where the project stands. The thinnest margin comes first.
- On the dashboard and the projects list. A budget widget and a percentage chip surface trouble without opening a report.
- Health follows the margin, not the spend. A project is on track at or above its goal, below goal while it's still profitable, and has no margin once cost has eaten the budget.
- Amounts are for owners and admins. Members see the percentage, the margin and the status, never the amounts.
- A budget covers the project's whole life, so its consumption ignores a report's date range. Every hour ever logged counts, each at the rate in effect on the day it was worked.
Read why we think a project should get one budget, and end when it runs out, in Give every project a budget. Rates and project budgets covers job roles, dated rates, project overrides, budgets and margin goals, including why over budget and out of profit are different lines.
Fixes & improvements
- Work that runs past midnight is tracked against the right day.
- Clocking in or out, editing a clock signal, or deleting a session refreshes the reports built from those hours instead of showing a stale figure.
- A project with hours that couldn't be priced no longer reads "On track". Its figures are a floor, and the status says so.
- The Budgets report says when projects are left out of its Consumed total.
- The cost-ceiling hint uses your organisation's currency rather than always dollars.
- Budget amounts are hidden from members in the projects list too, not just on the report.
- A budget too large to store fails validation instead of failing the save.
- Clocking in no longer waits on budget totals.
- Reports stays reachable from the sidebar when it's collapsed to icons.
- Budget progress bars are named after their project for screen readers.
